Create news and events

How are news items and events different from pages?

You write news and events in the same editor as pages. They are built from blocks in the same way, but they have extra structured details such as category, author, card image and featured status. Events also have a date, time and venue. Those fields are what list blocks use to build sections such as “Latest news” or an events listing.

Create a news item or event

In the ⋯ menu of the editing panel, choose New…, then the News or Event tile. You can also go to Settings → Content → News or Events and choose New news item or New event. Enter a title and the item opens in the editor.

You can start from existing content too: Make a copy… in the ⋯ menu copies a page or news item as an event, and the other way round. The title, lead, image and blocks come along; a news copy needs its category picked again and an event copy needs a date.

Build the content from blocks. At the top of an article, the Page header block is designed to show the title, lead, date, category and card image automatically. For events, it can also show the event date and venue.

New news items and events are public immediately. Like a newly created page, a new item can appear in lists straight away. If you want time to work on it first, clear the publication date in its settings or choose Move to draft from the News list, then publish it when it is ready.

News settings

Open the news settings from the Page tab of the editing panel. They are organised into six sections:

  • Content: the title and lead, usually one or two sentences below the title.
  • Publication: the publication date. Leave it blank for a draft, or set a future date to schedule the item. On multilingual sites, you can also switch the item off by language here. This is also where you can mark an item as Featured; News list blocks can show only featured items or place them first.
  • Card: the card image and its ALT text. This image appears in news lists and is also used for sharing if you do not set a separate OG image.
  • Meta: the category and author. Categories can be used to filter news lists.
  • SEO: meta title and description, OG image, indexing and AI crawler controls, similar to Page settings. If you do not set a separate meta description, the lead is used.
  • Advanced: the news URL slug.

Events: two dates with two different jobs

Events have the same settings as news, plus a Date and venue section. It is important to separate two kinds of dates:

  • The publication date controls when the event page is live. An event taking place next month is usually published now so people can read about it or register.
  • The event start and end describe when the event itself takes place. Event lists use these dates to separate upcoming and past events. The end time is optional, but for a multi-day event it is worth setting so the event remains upcoming until it actually finishes.

Add a venue too. If the date is not decided yet, leave it blank: events without a date are excluded from chronological event lists until you add one. That is why a new or copied event opens its settings on the first visit, and until it has a date, a dot on the Page tab of the editing panel says it appears in no list. A past event can remain published; its URL keeps working, while the settings indicate that the event has already taken place.

Where do news items and events appear?

Each item has its own URL, but visitors will usually discover it through a list placed on a page:

News and event URLs

News items live under a shared prefix, for example /news/article-title. You can customise that prefix by language to something that fits the site, such as /blog or /updates. In Settings, open Content → News and choose URL settings. Events have their own prefix, configured in the same way.

Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, without slashes. If you already have published content and change the prefix, you can choose to keep the old URLs working with 301 redirects. That is usually worth doing so previously shared links continue to lead somewhere useful.
