Photo pile block

What is the Photo pile block for?

Photos visitors can get their hands on. A Photo pile puts polaroid-style photos on the page, slightly tilted, each with a short caption below. Visitors can flip through them, push them around, or enlarge them with a click. It suits the personal moments of a workshop, an event or a team, where the mood of the pictures matters more than the order of a grid.

The photos are cropped square, so it is worth setting the focal point on each one. The paper stays white on any background, like a real print.

Three arrangements, the same photos

You can switch the arrangement at any time without choosing the photos again.

Pile

One photo on top, beside the heading. Visitors drag it aside or use the arrows to see the next one; a line beside it shows which photo they are on.

On a table

Every photo laid out on a table; visitors can push them around with the mouse. On a phone they become a row to swipe.

Fan

The photos spread like a hand of cards; the one under the pointer lifts, and a click keeps it lifted. Best with 3 to 9 photos.

With the keyboard too. The Pile can be paged with the arrow keys and the buttons, and a screen reader announces which photo has come to the top each time. In the Fan, moving through the photos with the Tab key lifts them too.

It never makes a mess. Whatever a visitor pushes aside on the table moves only for them, and only until the page reloads. Each photo's tilt is always the same, never random. If a visitor's device asks for less motion, the photos move into place without animation.

What can you set on a Photo pile?

Apart from the photos, every field is optional.

Heading and text

With the Pile it sits beside the photo; with the other two arrangements it is centred above the photos.

Photos

Pick them from the media library and set each focal point with a click. Change the order with the arrows.

Caption

A short line under the photo in a handwritten-looking italic, such as "Our first garden, 2006".

Full screen

When on, a click opens the photos full screen, where visitors can page through them.

ALT and title

Each photo can have its own ALT text, which screen readers read out. The title is the tooltip shown over the photo.

Languages

The heading, the text, the captions and the ALT texts are written separately for each language.

Moments you can hold

Your photos tell a story. Let visitors leaf through it.

A few good photos and a short caption each are all it takes.
