Languages: primary and additional languages

How do website languages work?

One website, one primary language, and as many additional languages as you need. Visitors first see the primary language, whose pages use URLs without a language prefix, such as /about. Every additional language appears under its own language code, for example /en/about or /de/ueber-uns. The editor interface also follows the primary language.

Manage languages under Settings → Website → Languages.

Add or remove a language

  1. Choose the main language from Primary language.
  2. Under Additional languages, select every other language you want the website to support.
  3. Click Save languages.

If the change affects the primary language or removes a language, Demona explains what will happen before you save.

Supported languages

Your website can speak to visitors in 29 languages. Any of them can be the primary language, and any of them can be added as an additional language. The editor interface is available in all 29 as well.

Arabic (العربية), Bulgarian (Български), Chinese (中文), Croatian (Hrvatski), Czech (Čeština), Danish (Dansk), Dutch (Nederlands), English, Finnish (Suomi), French (Français), German (Deutsch), Greek (Ελληνικά), Hungarian (Magyar), Italian (Italiano), Japanese (日本語), Korean (한국어), Maltese (Malti) – new, Norwegian (Norsk), Polish (Polski), Portuguese (Português), Romanian (Română), Russian (Русский), Serbian (Srpski), Slovak (Slovenčina), Slovenian (Slovenščina), Spanish (Español), Swedish (Svenska), Turkish (Türkçe), Ukrainian (Українська).

Maltese is the newest, with Maltese URLs too: news items live under /mt/ahbarijiet/… and events under /mt/avvenimenti/….

A newly added language starts empty. Adding a language does not translate existing pages, news items or events automatically. You still need to fill in that language version of each item. AI can help with this in one step; see Edit multilingual content. Until a translation is ready, you can turn off that language version page by page.

What happens when you save?

What Demona updates automatically, and what is worth knowing beforehand.

Remove a language

Nothing is deleted. The language disappears from the public site, but its translations are kept and return if you add the language again.

Change the primary language

URLs without a language prefix switch to the new primary language, while the old primary language gets its own prefix. Menu links, the cookie-banner link and redirect targets are updated automatically.

Editor language

The editor interface always follows the current primary language.

Search engines and sitemap

The sitemap, llms.txt and language-version signals for search engines are refreshed automatically after saving.

Think carefully before changing the primary language on a live site. After the switch, old unprefixed URLs such as /about belong to the new primary language. Links placed elsewhere and existing search results will not automatically jump to the old page's new language-prefixed URL. If the site is already live, add redirects for important old addresses.
