Analytics and tracking

How do you connect analytics tools to your website?

See where visitors come from without pasting tracking code into every page. Connect tools under Settings → Marketing → Analytics. For the most common services, enter the relevant ID and Demona adds the integration to the public site:

  • Google Analytics 4
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Meta (Facebook) Pixel
  • for other services, a custom <head> script, for example Hotjar, Plausible or Microsoft Clarity

When the fields are ready, click Save analytics.

What should you do with the data? Our Google Analytics 4 guide helps you understand traffic and campaign reports, while the Microsoft Clarity guide covers heatmaps and session recordings.

Configured tracking tools only load after consent. Everything added here, including a custom script, loads only after the visitor accepts tracking in the cookie banner. The banner must therefore be enabled. If it is not, the Analytics tab warns you and links directly to the cookie settings. See Cookie consent.

Google Analytics 4

Enter the measurement ID in G-XXXXXXX format. You can find it in the data-stream details in Google Analytics.

One important GA4 setting: after the first page, the website sends its own page-view events as visitors navigate. In your GA4 data stream, open Enhanced measurement, then the advanced settings for Page views, and disable measurement of page changes based on browser-history events. Otherwise the same navigation can be counted twice.

Google Tag Manager

Enter the container ID in GTM-XXXX format. After the first page, the website pushes a page_view event to the dataLayer on each subsequent page navigation. In Tag Manager:

  • measure page views with a page_view Custom Event trigger,
  • do not use a History Change trigger for page views: the site also updates browser history while scrolling so the Back button can restore position, and History Change can fire for that too,
  • for GA4 tags, disable browser-history-based page-change measurement as described above.

Meta (Facebook) Pixel

Enter the numeric Pixel ID, for example 123456789012345. The Pixel receives a PageView event for each page opened after consent; no additional Demona-side setup is required.

Custom <head> script for other tools

If your service is not listed, add its embed script here. For security, Demona accepts scripts that load an external file, in the form <script src="https://…">. Inline JavaScript is rejected when saving.

For example, a Plausible embed can look like:

<script defer src="https://plausible.io/js/script.js"></script>

If a service only provides inline JavaScript, connect it through Google Tag Manager instead.

Where does tracking run?

Only on public website pages. The editor and Settings interface are not tracked. Your own visits can still be included if you have accepted tracking in your browser. If you do not want that, reject tracking in the browser you use for editing and testing.
