Cookie consent

How do the cookie banner and consent work?

The visitor chooses, and the website follows that choice. The cookie banner appears at the bottom of the site when someone visits for the first time. It offers two actions: Accept and Reject. Until the visitor accepts, tracking configured through Demona — including Google Analytics, Meta Pixel and other tools added under Analytics — does not load.

Configure the banner under Settings → Marketing → Cookies.

Cookie consent and analytics work together. Tracking codes configured in Demona only run when the cookie banner is enabled and the visitor has accepted. If you turn the banner off, IDs and scripts saved under Analytics do not run for visitors. See Analytics and tracking for setup details.

Turn on the cookie banner

  1. Enable Show cookie banner on public pages.
  2. Write the banner text, briefly explaining what cookies or tracking are used for.
  3. If needed, customise the Accept and Reject button labels.
  4. Under Privacy policy URL, select your privacy notice page or enter its address.
  5. Click Save consent settings.

If the banner is enabled without a privacy link, the settings warn you that important consent information is missing. See the GDPR checklist for the wider privacy setup.

On multilingual websites, use the language tabs above the fields to provide banner copy and button labels for each language. Visitors see the version that matches the page they are browsing.

Let visitors change their choice later

For consent-based processing under GDPR, withdrawing consent should be as easy as giving it. Demona therefore lets you choose how visitors can reopen the cookie banner:

  • “Cookie settings” link in the footer. This is the default and least intrusive option. If the footer is disabled, Demona shows the floating icon instead. You can change the link's label per language in the Footer link label field; left empty, it reads “Cookie settings”.
  • Floating icon in the bottom-left corner. Visible on every page and opens the banner in one click.
  • Do not show a control automatically. In this case, add your own link to #cookie-settings, for example in the navigation or privacy notice. Without such a link, visitors have no obvious way to reopen the consent controls.

The #cookie-settings link works with the other two options as well. You can use it in a Rich text block, Button block or menu item to open the banner directly.

What happens for the visitor?

  • On the first visit, the banner appears shortly after the page loads.
  • The choice is stored in that browser for your website. On another device or browser, the banner appears again.
  • Accept: configured tracking tools load and can begin measuring from that point.
  • Reject: configured tracking tools do not load. Demona also removes known tracking cookies it recognises, including cookies associated with services such as Google Analytics, Meta, Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, LinkedIn, Matomo, Microsoft Ads and TikTok.
  • Withdraw after previously accepting: the page reloads without those tracking tools, and recognised tracking cookies are removed.

Which cookies does your website use?

At the bottom of the Cookies settings, the What the site stores list shows what your website keeps in visitors' browsers. It is not a generic template: it is built from your current settings, so only the rows actually in use appear, for example Google Analytics or Meta Pixel if you added them on the Analytics tab, or the captcha's cookie if you turned it on under Integrations.

Each row shows the name, how it is stored, its purpose, the provider, its lifetime, the category (necessary, statistics or marketing) and whether it loads without consent or only after the visitor accepts. The list also follows how visitors can change their choice (footer link or floating icon).

Use Copy list to copy it in one go and paste it into your own cookie notice or privacy notice. Map, video and social media embeds can bring their provider's own cookies; the list mentions these in a separate note.

The banner's two buttons, Accept and Reject, carry equal weight, as consent requires.

Next step: connect your analytics tools.

Once consent is set up, add your Google Analytics, Tag Manager or Meta Pixel ID. Demona handles whether those configured tools are allowed to load.
