Sideways scroller block

What is the Sideways scroller block for?

A process, step by step. A Sideways scroller puts steps, pictures or chapters in a row. As visitors scroll down, the block holds still and the row travels sideways, so a single scroll takes them through every step. It suits a way of working, how a product is made, or a company's story.

It works best with three to eight steps, each with a short title, a sentence or two and, ideally, a picture.

Three layouts, the same steps

You can switch the layout at any time without rewriting the steps.

Cards

Cards side by side, with a picture on top and the title and text below. The most versatile layout.

Filmstrip

Tall pictures with the title and text over them. It looks best when every step has a good picture.

Chapters

One wide step at a time, beside a giant step number. A counter above shows which step the visitor is on.

Cards

Keep scrolling down: the row moves sideways until you reach the end.

  1. An old woodworking shop: a wooden workbench, with planes, saws and chisels on the wall
    01

    You arrive

Coffee, an apron and a quick tour: we show you where everything is and what we'll make today.

  2. Black-and-white close-up of two hands centring clay on the wheel
    02

    Centre the clay

The first step on the wheel: you steady the spinning clay with both hands until it runs true.

  3. Clay-covered hands shaping a pot on a spinning wheel, seen from above
    03

    Raise the walls

You open the centre with your fingers and slowly draw up the walls of the bowl.

  4. A woman in an apron cuts a slab of clay with a knife, a rolling pin beside her
    04

    Build from slabs

If the wheel isn't for you, you cut and join a plate or a mug from a rolled-out slab of clay.

  5. Close-up of a chisel carving a leaf pattern inside a wooden bowl
    05

    Carving

In the wood shop you carve a pattern into a walnut bowl we have turned for you.

  6. A smiling woman admires a finished walnut bowl on the workbench
    06

    Take it home

The wooden bowl goes home with you the same day; the ceramics are ready in about three weeks, after drying and two firings.

On scroll or by swiping. The Movement setting offers two options. "Moves sideways as the page scrolls": the block holds still while the visitor scrolls down, and the row travels sideways. "Swipe or scroll sideways": a plain row the visitor swipes, or moves with the arrows.

Nobody gets stuck. On a phone, in a narrow column, and for visitors whose device asks for less motion, the scrolling version becomes a swipeable row too. Search engines get the text of every step.

Sideways scroller settings: the layout and the movement at the top, the headings and the steps below.

What can you set on a Sideways scroller?

Apart from the steps, every field is optional.

Heading and subheading

The heading at the top of the block, with a short line under it.

Steps

Each step has a title, a sentence or two, a picture and an optional link. Change the order with the arrows.

Number the steps

When on, each step gets a number, so the order is clear at a glance.

Link label

The label of the steps' links. Left empty it reads "Read more", and it only shows on steps that have a link.

Pictures

Pick each picture from the media library and set its focal point with a click. Screen readers read out its ALT text.

Languages

The titles, the texts and the link label are written separately for each language.

One journey, start to finish

One scroll, and visitors have been through your whole process.

Short steps and good pictures are all it takes.
