Connect your own domain step by step

Why connect a domain you already own?

You keep the web address people already know. If you already own a domain — for example mycompany.com — your Demona website can use that address too. You do not need to buy a new domain or move the registration anywhere: the domain stays with its current provider.

All you need to do is add a few entries in the DNS settings at the company that manages your domain — usually where you bought the domain or host it. Demona shows you exactly what to enter. Copy, paste, save — we handle the rest.

What is DNS, and why do you need to change it? DNS works like an address book for your domain: it tells browsers where your website lives. You need to add a few entries — called records — so the domain points to Demona. You do not need to understand the technical details; just copy the values exactly as Demona shows them.

The whole process in five steps

Demona gives you the exact values at every step, with copy buttons.

  1. Enter your domain

On your website's details page, enter the domain and choose whether visitors should see the address with or without www.

  2. Verify that you own it

Add one DNS record that proves the domain is yours. You have one week to do this, although it usually takes only a few minutes.

  3. Point the domain to your website

Two more records route visitors to your Demona website. It's easiest to add these at the same time as step 2.

  4. Add the records for the padlock

These enable the secure connection — the padlock in the browser. As soon as the records appear in Demona, add them straight away.

  5. The domain goes live

Your website is now available at your own address, and the old demona.ai address automatically redirects to it.

1. Enter your domain

Open your website's details page in Demona, scroll to the Domain section and choose Your own domain on the “Connect a domain you already own” card. This option is available once your website has been created, renewal has not been cancelled and no other domain setup is already in progress.

Enter the domain, for example mycompany.com. As you type, you'll immediately see whether it can be connected. Then choose the primary address:

  • mycompany.com (recommended): visitors see this address, and www.mycompany.com redirects to it.
  • www.mycompany.com: visitors see the www address, and the version without www redirects to it.

There is no separate fee for connecting the domain. If the plan with your own domain costs more than your current plan, only the difference for the remaining days in the current billing period is charged, and only when the domain actually goes live. If you do not have enough credits, the button will not let you continue, but you can top up from the same screen. Finally, click Connect domain.

2. Verify that the domain is yours

After submitting the domain, the DNS setup window opens. The first record you see is a TXT record. In another tab, open the control panel for the company that manages your domain, find the DNS or DNS zone section and add a new record. Choose TXT as the type, then copy the name and value from Demona.

The window also includes step-by-step instructions for Cloudflare, Namecheap and GoDaddy. After saving the record, click Check. If we cannot see it yet, that's normal: DNS changes can take a few minutes and occasionally up to an hour to propagate. We keep checking in the background and let you know as soon as verification succeeds.

You have one week to complete this step. You can keep working on the website at its demona.ai address in the meantime.

3. Point the domain to your website

In the same window, the Traffic routing card shows the next two records. These send visitors to your website: one for the address without www (an A record) and one for the www address (a CNAME record).

Add both, ideally at the same time as step 2. If an older record already exists with the same name — for example one pointing to your previous website — replace it with the new one. Otherwise, visitors may continue reaching the old site.

What goes where? Summary — always copy the exact values from the Demona window.

4. Add the records for the padlock — do not leave this until later

Once the domain is verified, we start setting up a secure connection so the website opens over https with a padlock in the browser. This requires two more CNAME records. After a few seconds, the Set up SSL records button appears on the details page, and we also send you an email.

Add these records straight away. We wait roughly half an hour for them. If they are not added in time, the setup has to be restarted. Once the records are in place, it usually takes another 2–5 minutes.

One small trap: these record names arrive with your domain included, for example _abc123.mycompany.com.. Many DNS panels automatically append the domain themselves. In that case, enter only the first part in the Name field (_abc123), otherwise the domain would be duplicated.

5. The domain is live

When everything is ready, the details page shows the message “Your own domain is live!” and we send you an email as well. From then on, the website is available at your own address, while the old demona.ai address automatically redirects to it so earlier links keep working. If the plan with your own domain costs more, the difference for the remaining days in the current billing period is deducted only at this point.

If you started the website through the trial, the trial ended when you began connecting the domain — your content, of course, stays in place.

You can close the page at any point; the process continues in the background. When you come back, use DNS setup or Set up SSL records to continue.

If you get stuck

The most common situations — open a question to see the answer.

Do not delete the records later. They are still needed after the domain goes live: without the routing records, visitors cannot reach your website, and without the others we cannot renew the secure connection. If you move the domain to another provider, copy all of these records to the new DNS service.

YOUR OWN DOMAIN

A few DNS records, and your website is live at your own address.

You'll find the exact values on your website's details page, each with a copy button.
