Format text and add links

How do you format text and add a link?

Select it and format it — or just keep typing. You edit copy directly on the page: click a paragraph, heading or button label and start typing. This guide shows you how to format text, create lists and link to another page or an external website.

The formatting bar

Select a word or sentence and a formatting bar appears above it:

  • Bold (Ctrl+B) and italic (Ctrl+I),
  • inline code, useful for a filename or setting,
  • Text size: Small, Default, Large or Extra large,
  • Text colour: your website accent colour, default text colour, a softer shade or a custom colour,
  • Link (see below).

Text size and palette options follow your website's brand settings, so highlighted text stays aligned if you change the palette later. Use a custom colour only when you genuinely need that exact shade.

Links

  1. Select the text and click Link in the formatting bar.
  2. Start typing the title of one of your pages or news items. Choose a result from the list, which identifies whether it is a Page or News item. For an external website, paste the full address (https://…).
  3. If the link goes to another website, turn on Open in a new tab if you want the visitor to keep your site open.
  4. Click Apply.

Edit an existing link in the same way, or remove it with Remove. If the URL of an internal page changes later, Demona creates an automatic redirect from the old URL so the link keeps working.

Typing can be faster. In Rich text, Callout box and Image with text blocks, a few simple patterns turn into formatting as you type:

  • put text between two asterisks on each side to make it bold,
  • put text between single asterisks or single underscores to make it italic,
  • put link text in square brackets followed immediately by the URL in round brackets to create a link,
  • start a line with a hyphen and a space for a bulleted list, or with a number, a full stop and a space for a numbered list.

Headings

Use a Title block for section headings and subheadings. You can choose H1–H6 appearance, which also helps search engines understand the page structure. As a rule, keep one H1 per page; it is usually the main heading at the top. If the first line of a Rich text block is really a heading, use Convert… to turn it into a Title block.

Paste text from elsewhere

When you paste from Word, Google Docs or another website, the editor cleans the formatting. It keeps useful structure such as bold, italics, links and lists, while removing outside fonts, colours and styles. The pasted copy therefore follows your website's own design.

Keyboard shortcuts

On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.

Ctrl+B / Ctrl+I

Make selected text bold or italic.

Ctrl+S

Save immediately. You usually do not need this because the editor saves automatically.

Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z

Undo and redo.

Ctrl+D

Duplicate the selected block.

Ctrl+Shift+Backspace

Delete the selected block.

Esc

Close the open panel or menu.

Ctrl+K

Open the command palette: search for an action or a block, or add a new one.

/

Add a new block, when you are not typing in a text field.
