Images and the media library

Where can you choose images for your blocks?

One image picker, four sources. When you add or replace an image in a block, Choose image or Replace image opens the image picker. It has four tabs:

  • Library: images already uploaded to your website, organised into folders and searchable by name or ALT text.
  • Upload: your own images from your computer.
  • Unsplash: search for free-to-use photographs.
  • AI generation: create a new image from a written description.

Whichever source you use, the image is added to your media library so you can reuse it in other blocks later. Where a block expects a video, the same picker shows your videos instead (see below).

Stock photos on their own. The first version of your new website, and every new page, news item or event written with AI, gets matching stock photos in its empty image slots, so even the first version is built with real photos. They are added to your media library too, and you can replace them at any time.

Upload and Unsplash

For uploads, drag files into the picker or click to browse. You can upload JPG, PNG and WebP images, and MP4 and WebM videos; the uploader shows the current maximum size (10 MB for videos). You can upload several files at once, and blocks that accept multiple images — such as a gallery — let you select several in one step.

Drop files on the Library tab: there is no need to switch to the Upload tab. Drop files anywhere on the Library tab, the image grid or the folder tree, and they go into the folder on screen; a label shows which one while you drag. From All images they go to Not in a folder. A strip above the grid counts what is still uploading, and failed uploads are listed. If you open another folder mid-upload, the files still go where you dropped them, and the new uploads are selected for you.

On the Unsplash tab, search in English, for example “mountains”, “studio” or “coffee”. These images are free to use and are copied into your own library when selected.

If you currently have a folder open on the Library tab, uploaded images and Unsplash images are added to that folder. Images added while viewing All images or Not in a folder remain outside folders.

Videos in the media library

The media library stores MP4 and WebM videos too. For the Hero · video block, the Zooming image block and the background video in the brand settings, you can pick a video from the library. A self-hosted video loops seamlessly, while a YouTube video flashes on every loop. Image slots accept images only, so videos do not appear there.

Generate an image with AI

  1. Describe the image in one or two sentences, for example: “A sourdough loaf cooling on a wooden board, lit by soft morning light through linen curtains.”
  2. Choose an aspect ratio: Square (1:1), Wide (16:9) or Portrait (4:5).
  3. Optionally choose a style: Photo, Illustration, Minimal or 3D.
  4. Click Generate, then choose Use this image if you like the result.

Demona automatically incorporates your website's voice profile into the prompt so newly generated visuals stay closer to the site's overall style. Use See the prompt that will be sent to review exactly what is being passed to the model.

Image generation uses AI credits. If your team has disabled it in Demona's AI settings, this tab is unavailable until a team admin turns it back on. See Use AI in the editor for the other AI tools.

ALT and TITLE text

Every image used in a block can have two pieces of text:

  • ALT text: describes the image for people who cannot see it, including screen-reader users. It also helps search engines understand the image. A short, factual sentence works best, for example: “Two colleagues reviewing a plan on a laptop.”
  • TITLE: optional text shown when someone hovers over the image. Most images can leave this blank.

If an image is missing ALT text, the editor warns you but does not block saving. Some blocks also let you mark an image as decorative. Decorative images do not need ALT text and are skipped by screen readers; use this only when the image does not carry information on its own.

ALT text belongs to the image's use, not to the file itself. The same image can mean different things on two different pages, so each block gets its own ALT and TITLE text. The ALT text stored in the media library is only a starting point: it is suggested the first time you select the image, then becomes independent. Changing the library version later does not update images already placed on pages.

Focal point: what should stay visible?

Many blocks crop images to fit their own aspect ratio, and different parts may be visible at different screen sizes. Use Set focal point to mark the most important part of the image, such as a face or product. Drag the marker to that area and the crop will try to keep it visible. Reset returns the focal point to the centre.

The media library in Settings

You can organise images without editing a page. Open Settings → Content → Media library to use the same library you see when replacing an image in the editor, but without selecting an image for a block. You can upload, search, organise into folders, crop and delete. If you close it, use Open media library to return.

Folders

On the left side of the Library tab, use Folders to organise your images. All images shows everything, while Unfiled shows images not currently in a folder.

  • New folder: use the button beside Folders. To create a folder inside another, choose New subfolder from the parent folder's actions.
  • Rename, Move…, Delete folder: available from the folder actions. Deleting a folder moves its images and subfolders up one level; it does not delete the image files.
  • Move images: use an image's Move to folder control. In the Settings media library, you can select several images and move them together with Move.

Moving an image only changes its folder. The image URL stays the same, so pages already using it are unaffected.

Crop, rotate and flip

You can adjust an image directly in the media library. Hover over it and click Crop and rotate. In the Edit image window:

  • Aspect ratio: Free, 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1 or 4:5. Drag and resize the crop frame with the mouse.
  • Rotate left / right, Flip horizontal / vertical, and Reset to return to the original.
  • The Result row shows the final image size in pixels. If it will be narrower than 600 px, Demona warns you because it may look soft in a wide block.

Save as new image creates a new file in the media library. The original and every page already using it stay unchanged. Only JPEG, PNG and WebP images can be edited.

Save and replace everywhere. Use this when you want the edited image to replace the original wherever it is used. Demona first shows how many places reference the image and only replaces it after confirmation: pages and settings switch to the new file, and the original is deleted if nothing still needs it. If the image is also used as a social sharing image, previews already cached by social platforms may temporarily appear without the image. If a page using the image is open in another editor tab, reload that tab before saving further changes.

Keep the media library tidy

On the Library tab, images currently in use are marked Used. Use the Only unused images filter to find files that no page or setting references, then remove them together with Delete unused images. If a folder is open, the action only applies to unused images in that folder. Demona warns you before deleting an image that is still in use, because removing it would leave a broken image on the page.
